Booking a holiday can be a stressful and worrying time, what have you forgotten to do? This checklist will aim to ensure you have everything covered so you don’t arrive at the airport with no passport and not a penny to your name, but instead are armed with the tools to create the perfect holiday.
The first one may sound a bit obvious one, but it is an important one nonetheless – you must first select the destination for your luxury holiday. Choosing where you go will always affect the enjoyment of your holiday, so the destination you choose must reflect what you are looking for in a destination. Is it tropical peace and quiet you seek, somewhere to unwind and work your way through a good novel, or are you more of a night owl, looking for a location that offers you great nightlife and a lively atmosphere?
Flight transfers can sometimes be an issue. Some holiday destinations are not served by direct flights, and may be subject to stopovers – something you should research and consider as this can cut down on your time at your holiday destination. Flying to less high profile resorts can be more costly also, so this is another thing that should be taken into consideration.
The next thing to consider is the season in which you decide to travel. A holiday in the Caribbean may be subject to hurricanes and other adverse weather patterns during certain periods. It is a good idea to find out when these are and try to avoid them.
Avoiding public and school holidays will also help you avoid busy and more expensive times. Outside of these times, prices will drop and areas will become less busy, but you should also check that facilities do not close during these periods. Being in a luxury resort during a cloudy rainy period, where the water sports activities and poolside bar is closed is nobody’s idea of fun.
So what about the hotel you choose to stay in? Research here is vital. If you have children, is the resort child friendly? Is the pool area incredibly slippery, or is the pool deep with no shallow areas?
If you are elderly or are travelling with someone who is, check to see what the hotel access is like. Are there numerous steps up hillsides to get from one part of the hotel to another?
Ensuring the hotel is perfect to your needs means you won’t face any nasty surprises once you get there. A good resource to use when deciding if a hotel is right for you is Trip Advisor. This site features many independent reviews by visitors who have stayed at the resort. It also offers candid travel photographs of each hotel, so you can see what the hotel looks like outside of the images offered in the travel brochure and on the resort’s website.
“Fly light”. That is, save yourself some luggage space to fill with all the bargains you can pick up while abroad. Many destinations will have fantastic prices on local souvenirs, clothes or even the latest hi-tech gadgets – at a fraction of what it may cost to purchase from home.
Money is your friend. It is always better to take more than you think you will need rather than be stuck with not enough once you are at your holiday destination. Be wary of taking wads of cash out, should you lose an item of luggage or it become stolen, you’re only fallback is dependant on your travel insurance policy. Travellers cheques are a good idea, ensuring you keep reference of each cheque so that, should you lose them, you can easily and quickly get new cheques issued to you.
If you are going to take a credit or debit card abroad, ensure that you will not be charged for using that card abroad in cash machines, shops and restaurants. Some will charge you!
Ensure you have adequate travel insurance. Again, shop around, find out the best deal. There are numerous travel insurance comparisons on Travel Insurance Views & Reviews which can help with the shopping process, but always ensure you check the policy details – what you are and are not covered for.
Finally, check different sites for the best deals. Tropical Sky offer bespoke luxury holidays are good prices, and have recently won The Times Best Tour Operator Award.
