Number crunching to predict Flintshire’s future May 28

An economic regeneration report for Flintshire gives us lots to think about.

Here are the main stats and predications:-

Unemployment in the county could jump from 2.8 per cent to 6.7 per cent due to the Credit Crunch.

More than 1,200 jobs have been lost since January 2006, and there’s a concern the number could “explode because of the economic downturn”.

This is because the county is a big manufacturer – which accounts for 34 per cent of all jobs in the county compared to 14 per cent elsewhere in the UK – and manufacturing is an area of business affected badly by the recession.

Four per cent of Flintshire companies are responsible for 47 per cent of all jobs, and the county’s rate of business start-ups is 25 per cent less than the UK level.

So, whilst we’re good a bringing in the big businesses, we’re not as good at helping new and small companies to find their feet.

Nearly 40 per cent of companies believe there is a gap between the skills needed for business and those of applicants.

That must relate to practical skills and not academic results – as we’re forever praising ever improving exam results year in and out.

Tips For Advertising Your Villa May 28

No villa owner will be using their holiday villa throughout the year.So why not generate some income from the villa when it is empty by renting it out.Recently, there has been an increase in the number of people who look out for and want to stay in villas when on a holiday.

If you want to rent your villa, you first have to let people know about it by advertising it. Start by telling your friends, family and your immediate circle about it.

You could take some interesting and appealing pictures of the premises and create some posters with them.Your workplace, social places or hangouts and the public display boards are great places to place these posters.Printing business cards to distribute to people you meet is also a great advertising idea.

Establishing an online presence is very important nowadays as more and more people are turning to the internet for information. To help you with your online advertising, you will find that there are many websites that will willingly advertise it for you.

As the chances of a person seeing your ad or villa in an overpopulated site is rather low, it is better to avoid these sites. It is only by making your ad shine above the rest that you ensure you receive enquiries for your property. It is therefore better to place your villa advertisement on sites that charge for their services.

In these sites, the bookings you receive for the villas through them will be charged. You will get more customers for your villa from these sites as they will work hard at advertising about your villa as they know that they will be paid for their efforts.

It is however, better to learn as much about any person who shows interest in your villa before renting it out to them. The best thing to do would be to collect some surety from the customer as security for your villa.

London Tour As An Alternative Vacation May 28

The volume of UK tourists visiting London seems to be growing as many budget conscious holiday makers are chosing to holiday closer to home rather than go abroad as the global recession bites into holiday savings.

Whilst the worlds financial woes have largely affected all kinds of holiday sales including both domestic and overseas holiday destinations, London seems to have benefitted in terms of an increase in UK citizens visiting its attractions.

Graham Powell of London tours company, Country Travel Tours, says: “We’ve definitely noticed an increase in demand for our London tour guide service and more than ever our customers are UK residents, many even local to London.

In addition to growing demand for Tours of London, the capitals museums and galleries are seeingh an increase in visitor numberts. This trend has also spread to the rest of the UK and is thought to be a result of a decrease in people’s disposable income and a view that a cheap or even free visit to the local museum is a good alternative to an expensive night out on the town.

One interesting twist on this apparent good news is that most London hotels are reporting declining occupancy levels which would seem to contradict any apparent influx in domestic visitors to London. Although many people see this simply as indicative of the kind of visits people make to the city. Graham Powell explains: “What we have been seeing is more day trippers coming to London rather than say week long holiday makers using our London tour service. Also a lot of people tell us they are staying with relatives either in or close to London as opposed to booking paid accommodation in the city.”

London tour guides guides and museums aside, for many suffering business reliant on tourism in London the 2012 Olympics cant come soon enough.

On the look-out for polecats May 27

Springwatch presenter Simon King has been inundated since asking on last night’s programme for your reports of polecat sightings, including several in NE Wales.

polecat photographed by security staff at BHP Billiton gas terminal at Talacre

Harrishawker1 writes: “I have seen 2 wild polecats in the last six months whilst out working the ferrets for the hawks. The first one was living in a rabbit waren and tried to attack the ferret we were working outside the hole. This was near Abergele. The second one was on the sand dunes doing the same near Gronant, Prestatyn, whilst out hawking.

“We also have a friend who lost a ferret whilst out in the fields near Prestatyn and he found it six weeks later whilst walking the dog but the twist is the ferret gave birth to kits a week later and they all have the markings of wild polecats.”

Meanwhile, BusterHarding points out that polecats aren’t necessarily the shy and retiring type: “We saw a polecat running across the Rhuddlan road in Rhyl!”
