Easing The Drive on Holidays in the UK Jan 24

There are many supposed advantages of temporary car insurance in terms of getting drive away cover if you’ve just bought a car or if you have relatives visiting and they need to  borrow your car for a few days.   It’s quicker than going through the red tape of adding them to your existing policy, only to remove them shortly afterwards and easier on the pocket than hiring something for a week.    Apart from those possible circumstances,  the other potential area of benefit for short term car insurance lies in sharing the burden of driving on holidays in the UK.    Given the relative economic climate at the movement, more of us are considering staying in dear old Blighty this summer.  Unless you want to entrust your family, luggage and schedule the vagaries of the rail network, for most of us that means a fairly lengthy drive the desired holiday destination.

For some families, sharing the driving may not be too much of an issue as it’s likely that either  husband and wife will already be named drivers on the other’s  annual insurance policy.  If that’s the case, then it’s entirely possible to take turns on lengthy trips so you both arrive equally refreshed (or at least equally exhausted!).  What happens when it’s a bunch of friends or youngsters who fancy a week or two away?    It could be anything from a surfing weekend in Cornwall or a bunch of mates taking a camping trip up to the Lakes.   In these cases, it’s likely that there only be one member of the party who has access to anything on wheels big enough and reliable enough to make the trip. Sharing the cost of petrol is certainly going to be much cheaper than taking the train or even flying.  If the vehicle is big enough (like a camper van or something similar) you could even save on accommodation.

In those circumstances, it seems unfair to have the hapless owner do all the driving, so sharing that job as well as the navigation would also make for a much less stressful journey. However, not every member of the party may have fully comprehensive insurance and those who do may in the dark about liability, especially when driving someone else’s vehicle.  Cost if you are under 30 is also certainly a factor to bear in mind.

That’s when the real advantage of one day car insurance hits home.  If all you need is cover for a few days it can all be arranged at incredibly short notice.   All you need is a ‘phone or an internet connection and within minutes you can be insured on any vehicle provided it’s roadworthy, worth at least £1,500 and hasn’t been modified in any way.   For a bunch of lads on holiday, getting temporary cover means you can share designated driver duties too (which of course also means  sharing drinking duties).    Sharing the driving is more appealing if you also know you’ll get the chance to have a drink in rotation!  More serious circumstances can also occur on holiday though.   If one of your nominated drivers falls ill or runs off after a night on the town, a simple ‘phone call can let you make alternative driving arrangements quickly and easily.
