If are considering summer holidays in Wales for a particular reason, then why not choose the annual National Eisteddfod. This is a major international festival, and originally dates back to the twelfth century. There was a period of time when it disappeared from the social calendar, but it was later revived during the reign of Queen Victoria.

The National Eisteddfod is the annual festival of Welsh culture and heritage, attracting an audience of around 160,000 people. It is responsible for the promotion of the Welsh language and the artistic endeavours of its people, and is one of my favourite things to do in Wales. Perhaps the most famous of its winners is the Welsh baritone opera singer, Bryn Terfel.
The really interesting thing about this festival is its sheer diversity. I had originally believed it to be purely related to music, but how wrong I was. The Pavillion is the main point of focus in the Eisteddfod, which plays host to ceremonies, competitions and concerts. There is also a theatre nearby, art and craft exhibitions and a literary tent. If that wasn’t enough, there is also a science and technology exhibition and abundant life in the youth tent.
Each year the venue changes helping to create a truly national spirit and a sense of sharing amongst the people. As soon as the venue is announced for next year, I will be on the look out for holiday cottages in Wales, so that I can once again join the fun!
